I was recently looking at a 1989 25 outrage. I opened the fuel gage access port and was checking the fuel gage/fuel lines. I could smell a faint odor of fuel/fumes. Is this typical? There wasn't any hull damage at all and the boat appeared to be in great condition.Thanks.

Faint odor of gas? That's pretty normal. A little gas in the bilge will stink things up in a hurry.

Fuel tanks can corrode out but the fuel hoses are usually the first to go. Is your boat a salt water boat? Have the fuel hoses been upgraded?

Sometimes the slimey stuff that grows under the deck gives off an odor similar to gas.

The boat is a saltwater boat and the hoses appeared to be intact and secured properly, didn't observe any dry rot...I figured everything to be completely sealed eliminating any fumes?... Thats why I thought the odor may indicate a possible problem.Thanks.

Odor could be coming from the vent, especially on a hot day.

Lift the fuel gauge lens and smell gas fumes. This is not normal. I lift the lens on my 22'OR after use and fresh water wash down, -- smell no gas. Sounds like a BOMB to me. Sniff test goes like this-- would you feel comfortable fishing for the day with a guy who chain smokes?? Would you light up a cigar?? I know, don't smoke. Gas fumes come from a leak. Don't ignore. .03 David
