Has anyone purchased and used McKote industrial strength gelcoat purchasable through minicraft.com. I am just about ready to re-gel a 13' sport and since spectrum only sells in in quarts for $65 and minicraft.com sells five gallon pails for $225, it would be substantially cheaper this way, but is the stuff any good?

Someone once told me to always look for milspec gelcoat. I have always done that and never had any problems. That was 20 years ago. Apparently this stuff was developed by the military in the late forties and all that reached the public by the 50s was milspec?

Why re-gelcoat rather than paint?

What are you going to do with the other 3 gallons??? If you spray 5 gallons onto a 13'er it will be 1/4" thick. Did You check with Spectrum to see if they sell 1 gallon cans. I'm sure it's like paint, you save a bunch buying a gallon instead of 4 quarts. I've used Spectrum and it was very easy to use but I have never used anything else so I can't give you any comparison. I'd think that 1 gallion for the interior color and 1 gallon of exterior color would be plenty of gel-coat .

i checked the spectrum site and emailed them, they only sell gelcoat by the quart. If i buy 10 (five for inside; five for outside) it will cost $650 before shipping. On the minicraft site they sell gelcoat by the gallon but it is cheaper to buy one five gallon bucket than two one gallon buckets. the two five gallon buckets will still be $200 cheaper that 10 quarts of spectrum. If anybody needs some to do their boats, let me know.
