My steering wheel has a little finger screw plug on the hub, that looks like a place to top up hydraulic fluid --

My question is -- what fluid, and how much? When should you top it off, and how do you know if you've put in the right amount?

Any other routine maintenence chores for the business end at the stern?

Mark

It's an 87 'Sea star' system, I think.

Here's one for you while you're maintaining that system. Did you see the sticker on the back side of the cylinder at the engine (sticker faces transom when "SeaStar" sticker is facing you). Sticker says "Keep Shaft Well Greased". The grease repells water which will eventually cause little pits in the shaft which eat the seals and leak your fluid out.

My dad never saw the sticker until he was replacing the seals. Talk about learning the hard way...
