Wondering if there is a way to upgrade steering to teleflex and keep the original white 1967 wheel that I think looks kind of cool. Has anyone done this? Should I just forget it and get a new wheel?

Shouldn't be a problem...I've done it. The wheel should fit the new teleflex helm shaft. And you're right; the old wheels look great on the right boat.

The wheel will fit the new steering. The real trick will be to get the wheel off of the original steering. I tried all kinds of penetrating oil, moderate heating and lots of hard tapping and my wheel simply would not come off of the shaft. I wound up cutting the wheel off and putting a puller directly on the steel wheel hub. Even with heat, that hub would not release. I actually had to cut a slot in the hub and then spread it with a cold chisel to get it to release.

Hey, cool, thanks for the advice! So the rotary teleflex kits that are on eBay for around $100 are the ones to use? 8 feet long and with a stand-off bracket?

Thanks folks, this site is awesome.

Hey Herb,

Glad to see you discovered this site! I used it to buy a 15' and sell my 11'. Welcome aboard!

BTW, how does that 50 run?
