have what am told is a later style binnacle mount control with the key and cutout on it. plastic housing.
pulled it out in preparation for my new johnson 90 install and removed the long cover. metal filings in there and no grease visible. should just lube it up with triple guard grease? suggestions? and is there any recommended service for the cables? do they need lubrication regularly? or are they sealed?

My new side mount Johnson control came with a manual that had a drawing which showed the lubrication points within the control. The recommended lubricant was TripleGuard. I would imagine that the manual for your binnacle mount would have the same type of drawing too.
The cables don't need to be lubricated.
You are really gonna like that new Johnson 90!
