My [1989 Evinrude 50-HP outboard] has a periodic misfire at any throtle position. I thought it was a spun hub but this was not so . One new prop later, replaced CDI unit but problem persists. Fuel tank is good, carbs are clean. Any suggestions? My mechanic has no idea.

Disconnect the ignition wire at motor end and see if runs smoothly. Ignition system runs on an open circuit. The problem might be in the harness between engine and key switch.

This may sound silly, but I had the same kind of problem with a 90-HP Johnson. It just seemed to 'buck' at any speed, but only on occasion. Ended up that it wasn't the engine at all. The shifting cable was too loose. I tightened the cable (actually extended it to push it farther into forward gear). Problem solved, hasn't done it since.

Bucking can be lower unit as stated above but usually will only do it on plane.

My mechanic checked the grounds in the wiring to the control box and found a bad ground. We fixed it but the problem persists. We are going to try a new wiring harness and see if that takes care of it. Thanks for your help.

Ian,

The website listed below is about repairing older outboard motors. Some of the people on it are professionals; they own their own shops.

http://pagebiz.com/bds/motor/motorboat.html

Hopefully someone there will be able to help you.

The hyperlink above leads only to a "Error-404--NOT FOUND" result.

[Corrected spelling of EVINRUDE, America's most famous outboard engine, throughout the postings--jimh.]

I sure can't go along with "Evinrude is America's most famous outboard engine". Where did this fact come from?

Have you looked into the coils at all I know you said you replaced the CDI bof but on your motor does that lead into the coils? Also is the engine losing a charge from a bad stator or charge wheel. When you replace all of those parts (not cheap as i have done the same) and mechanic says "I don't know" my next answer would be to look for a new mechanic. Is this guy a reputable mechanic did they fire the engine in test tank etc etc. Where are you located I am sure some forum member knows a good mechanic in your area
