I am looking for a nicely designed padded seat cushion for my 1973 13' whaler. I am not sure where to begin to look so any feedback would be appreciated. Also i have a 1990 40 hp yamaha and when i go into reverse it sounds like the gears are grinding. Foward seems to be no problem at all again feedback would be great.

Check the shift rod for corrosion. That was how my motor got toasted.

The shift rod corrodes where it is exposed at the joint above the lower foot. The rod should be about a 1/4" in diameter and mine was eaten away to about an 1/8th. What happens is as you shift gears, the rod twists because it is weakened and doesn't engage the gears fully.

I hope you have better luck than I have.

But if it was the shift rod than why aren't I getting a similar noise when i shift into foward. And while i am in reverse it runs fine and does what it is supposed to. the motor had very light use and was a river motor. I am giving this fuss because taking off hte lower unit may be quite a job.

Just check for a rusted shift rod. If it looks like it half the diameter it should be, chances are it will need to be replaced.
Two weeks ago my engine was shifting fine and then last week it started grinding when in the neutral and I had to pull the shifter back towards reverse an inch to stop the grinding. Then when shifted into reverse it wouldn't go into gear, but forword gear still worked.

I described this to the owner of old of the oldest Whaler/ Yamaha dealer and it knew what the problem was write away. They have changed quite a few shift rods. I was suprised that they even had the the parts in stock, which proves this is a common problem.

Check you control cables and see if anything is binding or out of adjustment. Changing control cables is heck of alot simplier, but could be a waste of money if the shift rod has gone bad.

Good luck

Check if the cables are adjusted correctly. Yamaha uses a merc style lower unit and all mercs grind reverse. If no shavings on lower unit magnet, no biggie. You must also shift quickly, slow shifting makes it worse.

Well a week after i took possesion of the boat brandnew yamaha control cables went in and are adjusted perfectly. I dont think it is a problem with the shift rod because it isnt giving me that much fuss. I may have it checked out anyway. As of now I am going to go enjoy my day out on the water and do some further diagnostics and have some fun. Thanks for the help... I'm still looking for some help on the seat cushion. Some advice on that would be great.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think with the seats im going to attach some real nice padded folding seats. I hope it doesnt mute the classic whaler look, but the price is right and I wanted to have the back support. If anyone has had a bad experience with this meathod tell me your story. Thanks alot, Tim.

Depends on the seat you choose. The cheap ones will rust apart. I like just the twart and a cushion. Backrests do not really work while driving(unless you use your feet) and climbing over the seats is annoying.

Jim H what kind of boat do you sail. I was at riverside yatchclub this year sailing in the northeast junior championship area b. I do almost as much sailing as whalering.

"Boston Marine"...... I would like to purchase the seat. If you could tell me how you want me to purchase it that would be great. It will have to be shipped to New York.
