Pulled the prop on my Johnson after the week-end and noticed some oil coming down from above inside the exhaust housing. Pulled the prop because I think it is spun from hitting a rock - had the prop repaired. Used the boat quite a bit over the week-end after it had been sitting for quite some time. Wondering if this is "drain down" from unburned oil or if it is an indication of some other problem? Curious and somewhat of a newbie with these outboards.

I see the same from my 74 model 70 HP Evinrude. It's exhaust oil in mine. The prop seal is intact. I think this is pretty common especially in the older non-oil injected motors. They didn't burn alot of the oil that passed through them.

Thanks for the input. Thought something like that but tend to get a little nervous about oil when I don't know where it's coming from.

The 1975 70 hp Johnson that Bob Kemmler just took from me is doing the same. It must be a "normal" situation.

Easiest way to determine if it was indeed the lower unit oil is 2 ways one lower unit oils are mostly clear much like the gear oil in a car or truck Is you have a lower unit leak it would be leaking what looks like a yellow glue if the oil is black it is unburned oil form the exhaust. Second way is to drain the lower unit and look for signs of water intrusion which makes the oil look like it has half and half cream mixed in with it. Good luck

i have a 78 model 70 hp johnson....... i do not have any oil draining out of the lower unit...
one mechanic told me that if you have a johnson that has black crude flowing out the lower unit then the motor is not running correctly...just something i was told about johnson....
