I have a Garmin GPSMap/Sounder 168 on my Katama on which the sounder has stopped working (the depth display flashes and only garbage comes up on the screen). GPS/Mapping functions all work fine, however.Question: is the GPS or transducer more likely to go bad, and how can I check? The connection to the transducer seems OK. The transducer has taken some knocks but does not look visibly scratched or otherwise damaged.

Find someone with a similar Garmin SONAR and carry your control head unit to his boat, plug in his trasducer, see if it works. |

unfortunately I'm landlocked (in Durham NC) and don't know anyone nearby with a similar unit, so I went ahead and sent the unit in to Garmin for diagnosis (plus $99). You're right, their technical support people got back to me right away. Hopefully the depthfinder will be working again within a week or so. |

Baltica - I have the same unit and the exact same problem. My buddy has the same unit and I interchanged them to see if it was the transducer, it wasn't. I'm waiting til the end of the season here in RI to send my unit to Garmin. Could you let me know the details on your repair? Also, we are looking into purchasing the Bluechart CD, have you? Thanks, Alan |

Just got the unit back from Garmin- they confirmed and repaired the sonar problem and updated the software for a flat $99 fee ( warranty had expired one month ago...). The service was fast.... can't wait to get it out on the water for testing. |
