I'm looking to improve the swim ladder on my Montauk 170. I've currently got the factory platform and ladder, and I find it inadequate for scuba diving. I've been eyeing a four-step ladder from Garelick Mfg. (, select model #19834) that looks like a good start. Another product is at but that looks like it might be overkill and too expensive, as they emphasize custom solutions.

I'm a large guy, and with cold water gear on, getting out of the water involves a lot of force that the ladder mounting bracket will receive, so I'm wondering if the platform mounting bracket that Garelick sells attached to the stock Whaler platform will be reliable. Does anybody know about this product in particular?

Does anybody else have a good solution they'd like to share?

I think that ladder will only work with some sort of platform off the transom, like whaler drive. You can buy small platforms or make one. You might be able to make one with this bracket:

I see you have a platform - Sorry... A friend, 6'5" big lbs has a similar ladder and it works well.

I just looked at the wood locating diagram for the 170 Montauk and there are several areas of 1/2" phenolic on the lower area of the hull and a strip of 3/8" phenolic following up the port side upper strut area of your exiting platform. I would consult a local fabricator to make a 316L s/s base plate (mounted flush to the hull along the phenolic backed areas) to which I would mount a removable Armstrong 4-rung dive ladder. These ladders feature quick-release attchments and also float. I do not like the design of the whaler supplied platform and deem it only for casual use. I would discard the platform and sell it on ebay or something. Armstrong might even fabricate the whole thing for you.

Chuck Tribolet (Triblet), a poster on this forum, modified his Montauk ladder with an upgraded step system for scuba diving. He has a nice website dedicated to his boat:
