Raising Montauk RPS to add Tackle Drawers

I am thinking about raising the RPS 3-4", and mounting some sort of drawers for fishing tackle under the seat (above the gas tanks).
Any thoughts, suggestions, or potential problems with this idea?

Raised my seat on 88' Newtauk with Honduros mahogany. Milled to 2x4. screw to deck and 3m 5200. 7' piece of Maho cast 30 bucks, Used hinges on the front connecting the composit PRS legs to the wood. wing nuts on the rear w/ a hole. drilled though legs. fits a 28 gal tempo and can tilt forward to fill tank. call me if you want to see it in Gloucester or discuss

John, I would like to see your work. Why did you raise it? Storage or simply for tank access?

previous owner raised it to fit 28 gal tank. he used pressure treated wood. I removed and replaced with mahogany. Looks good. I could have finished it off better . Used white 3m 5200. Did not know they have a brown which may have looked better with the stained wood. I will be around all weekend if you want to check it out here in Gloucester. Iam out for the season.

One other suggestion in finishing the mahogany is to coat it with epoxy, and paint with a two part that matches the floor. Then no refinishing in the future.

good idea. What would match Desert Tan?

Desert Tan gelcoat probably match for starters....
Seriously, if you feel that spraying gel is a little out of your league, it's not that big a deal on the small stuff (and a great way to practice technique, etc), like two RPS risers. The downside is going to be wetsanding out the unavoidable orangepeal. You will, however, have a much thicker coating that will tolerate more abuse than just paint.
If you still are leaning toward paint (or have some sort of custom color to match) take the boat to your local professional automotive paint supplier. Many of them have computerized equipment that can analyze the color, and send mixing instructions to their mixing equipment. It was a perfect match for some stuff I did.
Hope this helps.

Newt, I am considering this exact same thing as a winter project. The only thing different is I use 2-6gallon tanks so raising the RPS will not be necessary. I was thinking of making something out of starboard (sp?) that would hold 4 trays. I target a lot of different fish and it would be great to have the trays set up for different fish and then just insert the ones I will need that day. I like some of the Plano trays. Have you considered what materials you would use or type of trays?

What is "orange peal". I have spectrum gel coat as I did over my anti-skid. Also used Duratec High Gloss Additive to harden. The rps legs and be gel coated. What is the process. Previous owner painted and is now peeling. I was going to let it peel and eventually sand of have blasted.
