i have an early 2001 13'sport. The boat came with bow and side rails. When I bought it I noticed that there were no mooring cleats mounted anywhere on the boat. I keep it on a lift or just tie it off occaisonally to a dock with a line from the side rail. Well this is fine, but I would like to add a mooring cleat if I can do so. The diagram I have of wood placed in the hull shows that the only place they can really go is where the bow rail is fastened. I sure don't want to drill into the hull anyplace else. Now, in the off chance that someone has run into this I thought I would post this request here.

There's no support on top of the gunwales for mounting cleats. I (and I suspect most other owners of smaller whalers) tie off to the bow norman pin, and the lifting eyes inside at the transom. Keeps the gunwales clear of protrusions, and eliminates the risk of water infiltration at the mounting points.
