I need to remove the fuel tank cover to repair the fuel gauge and try to dry out the fuel tank cavity. Also, there's a soft spot in the cover immediately adjacent to the consol on one side. What am I getting myself into?

Rolf -

You need to remove the seating, either the RPS or individual seats, then a whole lotta screws. Use a power drill/screwdriver and have a spare battery handy.

Use a new blade in a boxcutter to cut the caulk in the seams and then pry out slowly.

The repair, if needed on the cover can be done from the underside. Cut the fiberglass off (the RotoZip tool is great for this, and other boat projects...) scrape out the bad wood and replace with like material, and epoxy on the lid or fabricate up a lid using some small pieces of glass. I'd recommend using the West epoxy system, because they've got well written material for this type of small repair, plus a good selection of epoxy and additives to use.

Good Luck and be sure to ask any question that comes up.

I am interested in what you find around the tank. I have the same boat and find that the cover over the gas guage often has condensation beneath it and wonder if I should make a concerted effort to dry out the cavity. Good luck on your project and any suggestions are welcome.

Mine has lots of condensation and mold as well as some standing water around the gas gauge post. As soon as it stops raining down here in Texas I'll take a look.
