I have an older Montauk, and do some freshwater bass fishing as well as saltwater. I have become interested in putting on an electric troll motor, and was wondering if any of you have had experience (good or bad) with the Minnkota or Motorguide Saltwater troll motors? My specific questions are: Will I be able to leave the bow rail on, or will the gator mount not be able to function correctly unless I remove it? Is there a good place to put the extra batteries? (I already have 2 in the back for the main motor) Are either of the mounts the right size to fit on the bow of the Montauk, as in , do they have a small enough "footprint" to be mounted on the bow? What shaft length / thrust combination will be sufficient for the boat? Are there any other sneaky little problems that I have not anticipated on this project? Thanks in advance, as always. Killswitch, I also have a MinnKota 55#thrust w/52" shaft on my 73'Montauk. The rails are not a problem and I mounted the battery in front of the console under the optional casting deck. Let me know if you would like a picture of the bracket I made. I am using the Minnkota quick release bracket with mine. The 55# thrust is great, I live on a 120 acre lake and sometimes do not start the gas engine to fish it. The 52" shaft keeps the prop in the water when on big lakes and rough water. |

How do you route the wires from the battery to the motor? Is there a backing plate for the motor laminated into the bow? |

My Montauk has a casting platform so it was easy to hide the wires underneath it. I used 4 rubber expandable bushings(1 inch Dia.) and it seems to be very solid. Important to remember that you need to tie it down in rough water. |

Killswitch, I fish a lot of fresh water lakes for Bass, trout, pike, etc. I'm running a Pinpoint 24V 60# thrust, 52" AP motor. I called Pinpoint about use in salt water as well and they said no problem just rinse motor down with boat washdown. Their head units are sealed.I don't have a casting platform in my Montauk. Just fish from the existing bow locker platform. I installed a quick disconnect trolling motor plug in the bottom front of the console with a 50A breaker to two 2 group 27 batteries mounted in the console. The Pinpoint has a disconnectable foot pedal which is great so when I'm not using it I just unplug the motor, remove the pedal and the wires store neatly with the motor strap. Another great feature is the motor steps the 24V down to 12V and supplies 12V power for a a bow mounted Pinpoint Sonar unit that works with the motors built in transducers without having to run additional wires. re: "I called Pinpoint about use in salt water as well and they said no problem just rinse motor down with boat washdown. Their head units are sealed.".... I was in Bass Pro Shops last night (every in-store 2002 model year trolling motor is 25% off). Sales guy said using freshwater MotorGuide (and maybe Minn Kota) trolling motor in salt water would void warranty. Anyone else been told this? How much trolling motor do I need for Outrage 19 (transom mount)? Thanks.

Went with MonnKota Riptide 55#/12v latch door on my Montauk. It is very quit, strong and seems to be the choice among most fisherman here is south Louisiana. Follow the link below to a detail and pics of how it was mounted.http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/002229.html |

Minnkota's warranty is void if the motor is used in salt water, however this has been discussed extensively on FS forum and the general opinon is that if the controls and motor are rinsed well after use it is not a problem. There are several guides using this setup and claim they last as long as the saltwater models but cost much less. 24 volt motor is probably overkill on a Montauk. |

Anyone know of a model that mounts without drilling in to the bow - clamps on to the rail? I'd like to get one but would rather not drill in to the hull. |
