Question- Will white upholestry look good in my Montauk which was originally desert tan? I am redoing the upholestry on my 85 Montauk. Originally, it was desert tan with black piping. I found an upholsterer locally who can replace it with white pleated material. He cannot match the tan with pleats. He is also going to cut a notch out of the rear portion of the seat cushion for easier access to fuel and guage. I know I can order from Halls but I really want my notch cut and I am saving a few $$$$. Has anyone done this and been dissapointed? Your thoughts are appreciated... |

All my cushions are and have been white. Some with color piping to match canvas. |

Ditto....I would have done mine in white with red piping but I originally just replaced the rps and I wanted it to match the cooler. When you see the new vs the weathered, I replaced the cooler shortly after and had a back rest made to match(rps). If I would have known I was gonna do all of it I would have done the white. I will say that the tan looks great though and hides the dirt better. |

I got a brand new tan RPS seat cushion. My wife doesnt like it because the tan color is not uniform throughout - it's kind of blotchy. In her words, "it looks dirty already". To do it again, I would go with white. |

I had OEM tan with brown piping, but the brown is almost black, at least to my eyes. That's probably what you have. The replacement piping was a little browner, but it was fine. Regarding white vs tan cushions in a desert tan hull, I come down strongly on the tan side. Its not what it looks like when its clean that matters. Whalers are hardly ever clean anyway. The slightly mottled effect on the original tan cushions is intended to hide a little bit of dirt. White will look clean for about 20 minutes. I think the push to white whalers and whaler interiors is because they look spiffier on the showroom or boat show floor. The combo of white cushions in a desert tan hull just make the tan look dingy, thus causing the owner to drive to the showroom for a nice clean new boat. That's not what whalers are about. There are a couple of good sources for relacement OEM quality cusions, including Dave's Upholestry http://davesup.com:6400/xmlshell.asp?doc=1 and Hall's Nautical Upholstery www.hallsnautical.com Prices at Halls look pretty reasonable to me, and the fit is supposed to be excellent. |

Actually it is the grain of the upholestry that determines if it will dirty quickly. I had the original tan on my leaning post and the deep grain really picked up dirt. I ahve all matching white now and they get dirty but clean up well. I just recently got a used rps that I need to get a new seat cushion for and will probably get it in white for under $200 with a backrest piece. |
