I just finished adding a centerconsole and a deck to my old classic, I have a great 15 hp motor but doesnt do much for this boat, I have a trade offer for my 15 and in return I get a 50 hp merc from the 80's , Can this boat handle this motor ? I have read about mods with Jack plates but on 15-17' boats, im just trying to add speed to this puppy, Im basicly using to dip shrimp and snook fishing. Any thoughts on the motor would be great !

I have seen a lot of 13's with 50hp's on them. It would be a good idea to make sure that the transom is in good shape before you drop it on there.

It's nice to know I am not the only one who messes around with my "little" boat. :)

That older Merc 4cyl is very light for a 50. That boat will handle it well. I believe it will be a 20" shaft so you will need some type of jackplate to raise the engine up to it's proper height if transom is stock. Thing should scoot. Make sure carbs are clean on that engine or clean them. You want it to run right, too lean and POOF!

I know all about the carb cleaning from my young and gungho days, those days cost me lots of parts and OT to pay for new engines :(

Anyways thanks for all the advice people :)

I ran a 15" shaft 1970 Merc 50 in-line 4 on my 13 for 2 years. Loved it. See photo in the 13 Reference section. This is about a 45 HP engine when rated at the prop. Use a 17" prop and you should get about 42 out of it.
