New, they ain't much better!.. Like the little birdie sings; "Cheep..Cheep.. CHEAP "!!.... Anybody tried stainless steel replacements???...Tom

tflyer,

The Rod Holders for most Boston Whalers were made by Fentress. The earlier versions were 14" long and are no longer available from Fentress according to my conversation with Fentress Customer Service.

Some people here, including myself, have used 1 1/ 2" PVC. You can cut it to whatever length you want. 14" will fit the Teak Rod Holders brackets nicely and if you have Rod Holder Cushions as well, you won't be able to tell the difference except the PVC does not have the flared top.

PVC is cheap. A person could afford to replace them every year if they had to.

You can view some photos of these Rod Holders under my profile, Web Site, Fishing Adventures, 1985 Outrage 18....
The cushions are nice as they not only provide a back rest, but they also hide the PVC Rod Holders. Both my Montauk and Outrage have the Teak Rod Holders with the Rod Holder Cushions...

For What It's Worth

Tom, don'y give up on those rod holders just yet. Mine looked like death warmed over when I finally got to them. Brillow pad and Ajax with bleach, along with a whole lotta elbow grease cleaned them up nicely. They don't have that "glassy" finish anymore, but like whalersman pointed out, if you have the pads, they look fine.

Whalersman, can you describe how the cushions and rod holders mount to console? Thinking of adding some, does anyone know of or have a set F/S. I guess you could get the cushions from Hall's.

Thanks,
,63

63WHALER,

I have made some drawings of the Teak Rod Holders that are in the OEM section for those people that wish to make their own.

Otherwise, I have sold a few sets for $50.00 on eBay. These do not include the cushions but they do include the Teak, 6 PVC Rod Holders, and the Stainless Steel nuts and bolts. I have purchased the cushions from Lois at Hall's Nautical and they look almost exactly like the originals.

I have two sets that are almost ready For Sale in case you are interested. If you would rather make them yourself, get the drawings and buy some Teak... I only planned on making a few extra sets as I had some extra Teak I didn't know what to do with.

They mount to the console via 2 bolts through each of the Rod Holders (upper and lower) and through the teak. On the ends of the teak is where you place the snaps that you will receive with the cushions from Hall's.

Good Luck
