I am installing a 1999 Merc. 100 hp on my 1975 Whaler Bass Boat. I am wondering how to install the 2 lower thru transom bolts. They will be under the spalsh well on the inside with no access to install the nuts. How can I do this? Thanks in advance.

If you raise the engine a little, the bottom bolts will (and need to!) come through into the splash well. This will mean the bolts will go through the top hole in the bottom set of 5 engine holes. In the top set of 5 engine holes, you may need to use either the 2nd or third (middle) holes. Since you are running 100Hp, you can use this extra engine mounting height for best performance anyway. Consider a 20" Merc Laser II prop. For the engine to be set all the way down on the transom (not recommend anyway), you would have to use SS lag bolts into the transom wood. Some recommend this, but I don't with all that HP on an older hull. I had a Merc 115, with same PT transom bracket that yours has, installed on a 1971 16' hull, so I know it works. |

LA, I agree with Larry... don't use the lag bolts as they will strip out if you hit something hard... will strip out before pt&t hydraulics release (been there done that)! Consider a jack-plate or set-back bracket to solve problem and also give you more adjustability in height selection. The plate/bracket can be drilled as desired for transom match-up and engine mounting holes are now in the plate/bracket... Happy Whalin'.. Clark .. Spruce Creek Navy |

Thanks for the input guys. I'll give it a try. By the way anyone know where I can get instructions for installing the Merc. controls. I had Evinrude controls on there before. Thanks again. |

Every new Mercury comes with a complete, step by step Installation manual in addition to the regualr owners manual booklet. This doucument has everything you need to do the job perfectly, with proper adjustments. Any Mercury dealership should have one of these lying around, or you could probably get one from Mercury direct. It will be engine specific, such as for the same engine 100-115-125's. |
