I have trouble with my shifter engaging in the winter time only. I can't get the shift cable to adjust properly. If forward works ok then reverse want or if reverse works then forward want. Can the shift lever be adjusted itself to get more adjustment with the shift cable? I think the shift shaft is a liitle short causing to much travel by the shift cable. When trying to back off the trailer the unit will not stay in gear. If I adjust this the the unit will not go into forard gear. Please advise.

Sounds like you are not getting enough throw on the cable. You might have something worn in the control itself. What brand are the controls?

On my 96ish Evinrude 90, the OMC control
binnacle has two holes for the shift cable,
and I'm on the closer-to-center (short-throw)
hole. It would be an hour or two to change
holes. You'll need a replacement cotter

For this motor, the spec is 1.25" throw,
+/- 1/8".

Be careful though, if you adjust it just a
little too far one way or the other, it will
bottom out at the motor end, greatly
increasing the loading on the shift
mechanism. I suspect his was responsible for
my recent broken shift lever.
