Thanks to y'all's guidance I successfully completed a steering system replacement (cable and helm) on my '86 Montauk this weekend. Used the Teleflex quick connect II system. Judging by the date printed on the cable, it looks like what I replaced was the factory original. Although it took some finesse, cable placement through my '86 Johnson 90hp didn't require any loosening of the engine mounting bolts. Although I completed the project over the course of two days, I estimate the entire project only took me about 3 hours (again, I'm quite the novice), and the real difficulty was in when it came time to mount the new bezel. Because it would have required cutting a larger diameter hole in the console, I opted to simply reuse the old bezel (still in great shape!) with some shorter bolts to secure the helm. Running that cable through the tunnel was a lot easier than I had anticipated.

Water test results were fantastic--easy steering on a beautiful run from Isle of Palms to Capers Island and back (I'll try to post a trip report on the Trips/Rendezvous topic shortly).

Thanks for the encouragement and support. Happy New Year to all.
