I will be replacing my 1968 Sakonnet console with a new (original style) one. I have never worked on a Teleflex Seastar stearing system but will need to disconnect the helm and reconnect it afterward. Can I simply unscrew the connections to the two "cables"? Any precautions? will I need to add stearing fluid? What type?

It looks too easy but I would appreciate any comments.
Smirk :-)

If you have a seastar hydraulic steering system, those cables are hoses. When you disconnect the hoses from the helm station keep them elevated so the fluid does not run out of the hoses. Fluid will run out of the helm pump(at the console) so you will probably have to bleed the system when you get done. Only use seastar hydraulic steering fluid in your system available on the internet or at West Marine. I completely disassembled my helm pump two years ago, cleaned out all the accumulated junk, freed up all the stuck pistons on the inside and completely rebuilt the pump with a new gasket set and the system as been problem free since. The Teleflex hydraulic steering division is located in Canada and I have contacted them several times. They have always been very helful and informative. I have included their URL below where they have alot of info, including filling and purging the system. Hope this helps.

Thanks diamondjj, just what I needed to know.
The Seastar site was helpful too. I was able to download a manual for my system.
Thanks again, Smirk :-)

Smirk,
One other thing. Bleeding the system can be a messy affair, primarily at the cylinder mounted on the engine. You should have two bleeder screws on the cylinder depending on the cylinder type. Get some clear tubing that will fit snugly over the bleeder outlets and place the other end in a clear jar. That will keep the fluid from squirting all over the place and will keep the mess to a minimum plus you will be able to use the fluid over again provided it is not dirty or has water in it. The clear tubing also allows you to see when the fluid runs clear (no air bubbles).
