Sorry for another Montauk fuel tank post. I am about to purchase a 20 or 27 gal fuel tank for my 78’ Montauk to replace the 2 tempo 6.5 gal under the RPS. I have not decided between Moeller (Cabelas $105) and Tempo yet. Which is best? I have cut out eight 1” black starboard blocks to go under the seat to raise it 1 or 2 inches. I have not installed this yet, but am prepared for raising the seat now. I have read a lot of the post here, but have not been able to find information about putting an after market fuel gauges and/or a level sender on a 27 gal. Tempo. From what I understand the gauge is crap on this tank. Is the Moeller tank’s gauge better? Has anyone tried drilling another hole in the tank and install an electric gauge sender, or just a better gauge? It would just seem hard to just pick up the tank and shack it(like I do now with the 6.5 gal) to see how much is in it. Another question: Can someone measure their 27 gal. tank and tell me how high the top of the tank is and how high their cap is from the floor. I could not find this info in the reference: tank section. Also is the 28 gal tank ($99) that Basspro sells the same tank as the 27gal that West Marine and boaters World sells? Thanks and what a great site this is. Archie

Hi a:
My Montauk has a Moeller 20 gal tank under the RPS. I need to slide it back from under the seat about 6 inches to fill it. I can see the gas level through the plastic so no need for a guage. It is totally satisfactory.

I have the 27 gallon Tempo under my RPS. I do have to slide it back a bit for filling. I did remove the tank mats and the tank just fits witout raising the RPS. The guage works fine, no problem.

Can't get to the boat to take any measurements though.

Will e-mail you a picture of the installation.

I don't have blocks under the RPS--my wife has short legs and doesn't like a high seat.

The Moeller 27 measures 29.5 length, 19 front to back and 14 high with the cap in place. I do not think you will be able to move a full 27 back and forth to fill it so the "fill" had better stick out. I did read somewhere that you should not attempt to drill these tanks in any way as it will weaken them. The existing holes (fill and uptake) have a lot of plastic molded around them. Any other questions - just give me a shout. The boat is in the garage...Jim

I don't have any problem sliding the full 27 gallons back into place. I removed the tank pads and plastic on fiberglass slides well.

Dick, If you can slide it, how do you secure it. I'm guessing that when you slide it, you're not lifting it over anything...Jim

Archie from Arch: (Great name BTW).

I left the mats in and use the 27 Tempo. (I thought it was 28?) I raised the seat 2 inches so I don't have to move to fill but moving the tank back a little to fill w/o raising wouldn't be a big deal. I did raise it, however, b/c I used to have it strapped down and didn't want to fiddle with loosening the straps, moving, filling, moving then tightening the straps again. Somewhere along the line I took the straps off and never put them on again. Unless you're wave-crashing they aren't necessary.

As you are aware the Tempo gauge is for crap but I've gotten used to it over the years. I now just know how to look at it on the shaded side of sunlight to verify the level. At night I hold the searchlight to the side to illuminate it. I thought of an electrical gauge but just didn't want the added complexity as I'm always electrically-challenged anyhow. Me and most things that spark just don't get along.

I will try to measure it today but why do you pick the coldest day of the year to ask this? lol. It's 20 here now!!! Also, I think someone got/bought another filler cap that has a lower profile! Check this out first before raising the seat me thinks.

Nothing against Moeller but if I were replacing a tank I'd go with a 27 vs. a 20 for volume purposes. Moeller is clearer (vs. dark red) so you can see the actual level easier.

Oops...I didn't know Moeller has a 27. All thing being equal I'd be inclined to use the 'clearer' vs. the 'red' to observe the fuel level.

I don't have to lift.
The tank is secured with a heavy duty nylon strap that goes around the tank and RPS legs. I have been air borne more than once and have had no movement of the tank.

I have the 28 gallon Tempo. It fits well under the RPS, but the sides do tend to bulge outward, and I do have to slide it rearward when filling, but that is not a real problem.

I have it strapped down, and have drideck under it in the stock tank holders to even up the deck it sits on.

I have it strapped to the deck with two nylon quick connect straps. I doesn't move, and the water can be a little rough in the Atlantic.
