I am working on my 85 Revenge 22. The boat is in good shape. The boat has an Impulse 4040 fishfinder and LORAN receiver. Is it worth the $289 that the company will charge to fix it and bring it up to spec? I know that there are better [SONAR units]. I was planning to use my Magellan 315 GPS receiver for starters (instead of a LORAN receiver). I can barely use a GPS receiver and don't want to confuse myself with a Loran receiver unless I have to later on. I do use my GPS receiver for hiking and storing good fishing spots (from shore) and it works well. I have software and downloaded marine way points. I am hoping that it will do for me until I get some on the water time under my belt. I don't intend to go too far--Puget sound area--will be moored on Lake Washington--until I am comfortable with the new boat.

[Give] advice, please. Will the combo of the 4040 and 315 be OK?

I know on the lake it doesn't really matter but I do intend to go out in the sound fishing, crabbing, cruising, and so on. Input would be greatly appreciated.

When you say fix it ,what is the unit doing/or not doing.$300 seams a little steep for a repair. What's involved in the proposed upgrade. Is it just a upgrade to extensions for the ASF correction tables and year table. If it is a repair to the display then that the price you won't find any others to repair it.

The unit is doa. Haven't had a chance to play with it yet but I am assuming that it isn't "user service-able"

How did the unit die? When it was in use or on startup 1 time. How is the unit fused for power.Don't give up the ship.Let's see if we over the net can revive the unit,it could be some thing very simple to repair.Your Impulse unit was a/is nice peice of gear.

Thanks Tuna1. The boat is new (to me). My first BW and first real boat. I will look for a fuse and explore this more.

It is exciting to see this come together so that I can get it in the water. Moorage taken care of, hitch on the truck, now it is off to look for and find a good Yamaha mechanic to get a spring tune up, zincs, and some other work done.

I hope to have new batteries in soon. I will work on the unit more when I have better power. Hopefully I can report back that it works.

Your Impulse 4040 is a great unit. I have had mine since 1997 and still works great on the Great lakes.
The fuse is in the power cord(20amp)
I am looking for a users manual as mine was lost during a move and possibly thrown out with other magazines. Can any one help me locate one?

You have revived a thread that has been dormant for about six and a half years.

The future of LORAN is not good. The Obama administration has indicated they do not wish to fund it, and it will likely be shut down. Until this issue is resolved, I would not recommend investing in new LORAN equipment.

I have an Impulse 4040 that does not work. I would like to find another since the boat is all wired already.--Jim

It is the year 2009. The time has come to lay LORAN to rest.

Splurge. Spend $100 and buy a GPS.

Welcome to the 21st Century.
