My metal transom HIN tag is very heavily oxidized, and I can only make out a few digits. I've tried using a ton of 3M marine restorer, but it doesn't work very well here for whatever reason. Does anyone have a better way to get the numbers back?

When I was at whaler, we'd make new ones on request. I don't know if they still do.

Chuck Bennett at Whaler may have a metal capacities plate for your boat. He couldn't find one for my boat, but he might have one for a Montauk.

he gave me all the numbers I needed and suggested I go to a trophy shop and have a new plate made for my boat. I have yet to try that, but I plan to do it this spring. Chuck is be a very knowledgable and helpful guy. Give him a try.
