Another post with pics of the 170 canvas led me to this ponderance: Mills' web site seems to suggest that on a 17 you can only get a forward shelter if you get the suntop etc with it. Is this true? Does anyone have a forward shelter alone? I'm wondering if there's some structural reason for that. I think I'd like the forward shelter, but don't really want a top or all that other canvas. If anyone does have a forward shelter, how do they like it?

Difference between a forward shelter and a dodger. I think you want a dodger which any shop can make you.

No. You can use the forward shelter by itself. There is no need for the flying top in order to use the forward shelter. You can also use the flying top by itself too, or the sun top. All of those components are self supporting and sold separately.

Many people use just the forward shelter for wind protection. My own preference is for no canvas at all. It is very awkward and restrictive even under the best circumstances. I had a full set of canvas on my last Whaler that I used a couple times think I would really like it. But after that it spent the rest of the ten years I owned it sitting on my basement collecting dust.

I had a forward shelter on my OR 18 for years and found it very handy out in the ocean for wind and rain protection especially for my guests. Two years ago (I got tired of being wet), I added the flying top (which can stand by itself) and windshield that zips all together with the shelter (all Mills) have used it all and have no regrets. I find it easy to set up and fold away (forward) with the exception of the windshield which I roll up and store away. I like the flexibility that the canvas offers. If everybody wants sun, everything is down. If it starts to rain, everything goes up.

See Cetacea page one for both Mills Forward Shelter and Flying top set alone.
