I have found a new (to me) product for staining wood that I think has some real applications for us whaler owners.

The product is called Behlen Solar-Lux. http://www.woodfinishsupply.com/SolarLux.html

It is highly UV and fade resistant, and is non-grain raising. It is alcohol based dye that will not hide the grain of the wood, and is dry for top coating in an hour.

I have been using it on another project and find it very easy to use, and easy to clean up.

The med. brown mahogany is a great choice, but it is a bit red. It can be mixed with other Solar-Lux stains to get any color you want.

Sounds like a solution to a lot of finishing problems.
Where do you buy it? I didn't see a direct sales option on the site.

I get mine from woodcrafters, but you can get it over the internet from http://www3.woodcraft.com/Finishing/woodworking/7234.htm

I think that the use of this stuff in combination with a good spar varnish like Interlux Schooner will go a long way in preventing problems.

I wiped a light coat on some scap Mahogany I had laying around, then I cut it in half. I was amazed to see penetration nearing 1/8", but mostly 1/16"!
