I'm looking to placing vertical fishing rod holders on the console of my Nauset. I see in photos that the holders are often located on the front of the console. I'm thinking of installing 4 to 6 holders. It looks like placing them in front would impede forward visibility. An alternate location would be on the sides of the console, which may restrict movement around the console.I'm looking for advice. Can anyone share experiences with placing rodholders in either of these locations ? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

gcl,I much prefer the rod holders in front of the CC. Especially if a cooler sits in front of the cc. This set up greatly reduces the risk of accidental "hook ups". The added benefits, an uncluttered walk way and it leaves the grab rails clear to be used. jmho. |

Used to have a rocket launcher on the back seat of my Nauset. This allowed me to use them for trolling as well. Smirk :-) |

gcl,It's like anything else. When I got my boat with a t-top I hated it because I thought the tubes blocked my view. I have adjusted and found it is no longer a problem. Rods are generally so small that they have never been an issue, but for you they might seem like the tubes seemed to me. I can send you a picture of my CC with a couple of rods in front and you can see for yourself. |

I have the six rod holder set up on the front of my Montauk console. I usually run with four rods in it and they don't interfere with visibility. Dick |

I also have the 6 rod holders up front and usually have 4 rods there. It's kiind of liking putting a pencil in front of your face about a foot away... One eye or the other (excuse me, not that one eye) usually will tend to view around something as small as a fishing rod. I have never been bothered with the rods at all... |

Thanks for all the posts. So far it seems that having the rods in front does not impede vision. Any other opinions out there ? |

Impeded vision is something to thik about and also interferance with your bimini from the rods in the console rod holders. I have the console rod holders and that's always been a problem. The advantage of the console holders becomes obvious when you're fighting a fish that wants to go around the boat a couple of times! |

timbaho brings up a good point I had forgotten about and that is the Rods in the Console Rod Holders do need to be moved when the Bimini goes up. I put two rods in the RPS Rod Holders and the other two rods in my Lee's Rail Mount Rod Holders when the top goes up.... |

Thanks for the info on the potential conflict with a bimini. In my case that is not an issue because I do not intend to have a bimini. Last weekend I cut an entry hole into the shrinkwrap and spent some time crawling around, measuring and dreaming. I am leaning towards placing the road holders in front, but I have some cooler seat issues that I will not be able to fully evaluate until I have unrestricted access to the boat (no cover). Anyone out there who has mounted rod holders on the sides of a Nauset center console that would care to comment ? Thanks to all. |

I built a combo backrest/rod holder for my Montauk using plywood, fiberglass and gelcoat. I find it gives better back support than the optional model that Whaler offers. it holds 6 rods. It required drilling holes through the front of the console which was a little nerve racking, but it payed off with the extra rod storage. |
