I have a 1977 21' outrage and on my center console under my controls and guages there is a black tape stuff that is stuck to my console it covers the whole dash. Mine is dried up and cracking. What is this and where can I get some to replace?

lewain,

There are several threads about the exact material used and where to get it. You can use the search engine to look these threads up.

On my second Montauk I just went to a local sign shop and bought a yard of some 3-M flat black vinyl and used that as a replacement. It looked better than the original because it had less texture to it and stayed cleaner. I only owned that boat for four years so I do not know how well it held up in the long run, but at four years it still looked good as new.

The biggest hassle is removing the helm for the installation of the new vinyl. This is a good time to redo the teak trim pieces around the perimeter and rearrange the gauges in the dash panels if that sort of thing is on your to-do list.

When applying the vinyl be sure the surface is totally clean first and then spray some soapy water on the surface before applying the peel and stick vinyl. Start at one edge and peel back the backer as you move across the surface. Be sure to avoid any wrinkles. The soapy water will allow you to pull the material up if you just HAVE to but it’s not easy, so be careful.

Work out any bubbles you may get with your fingers. Try to get the bubbles out before you continue on in laying the vinyl all the way down. You will still probably end up with a few bubbles but they can be worked out to the perimeter and eliminated.

You should be using a piece of vinyl that is bigger than the area that you are trying to cover. There’s no way you can cut it to size and then lay it down exactly where you want it. You need to lay it down oversized and go back and trim it the excess with a razor blade or razor knife under where the teak trim pieces will mount.
