Author Topic:   How to disassemble RPS Pivot Frame?

Does anyone know how to remove the ('89 Montauk) RPS pivot frame rails from the 2 teak "oval" teak blocks on either end? It is not obvious to me how these blocks are removed and I do not want to break them by forcing it.

While cleaning up the teak and stainless steal on my Montauk RPS, I can hear water inside the pivot frame rails. I'd like to clean up the teak and rails; and also get rid of the water inside.

Thanks,
- Rob

I got mine off by simply pulling on one side of the stainless tubes. The two oval blocks are attached to the teak seat back with screws.

Rob,

I removed mine by first taking the rod holders out of the RPS. You'll need a long phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws at the bottom of the rod holder.

Then, unbolt the four screws that hold each oval teak block to the sides of the RPS.

Finially, slide the RPS out, and remove the teak blocks from the ends of the stainless tubes.

Rob,

The teak blocks just slide off the ends of the pivot frames. Yes, they are a tight fit; you don’t want any slop there at all, but yours may be extra tight if the teak is wet from being outside. If they are really stuck, then bring the frames inside for some warmth and dryness. Try again in the morning and see if they don't just come off.

Thanks Guys. I didn't make it clear in my post that I already have the Teak seat back removed fromt he oval blocks. I used the technique that Knothead described.

Tom, thanks. My boat is in a heated garage, but perhaps it needs more than that to dry out those end blocks. I'll bring it inside.

I thought I might be overlooking a "hidden" screw, or some other trick to get these ends off, but you folks have confirmed that they should just pull off. Thank you for the advice.

Ok, I gently tapped them off with a rubber mallet. They came off pretty easy. Thanks again.

Rob,

Glad you got off the blocks. I also had water collecting in the stainless tubing. I drilled a small hole near each end of each tube. It's been 3 years - not more water in the tubes.

Jim, I thought about doing the same thing - drilling 2 holes. I just might go ahead and do that now. Thanks
