I'm getting ready to install my new Standard Horizon FF-41 fuel flow meter (similar to a Flowscan), and it seems as though it should get power off of a source that is only hot when the motor ignition is on. My question is what is that source of power? Is there any problem with splicing into any "key-on hot" wire on the ignition harness or is there a better way to do this? Would my Whaler have a fuse panel somewhere that is only hot with the ignition on? The motor is an '89 Merc 200, the boat is an Outrage 22 Cuddy of the same vintage. I welcome input from anyone with ideas or who has installed a similar instrument on their boat.

Andy - Getting ready to do the same job. Just picked my unit from Bethel today. Based upon my reading of the instructions, you are correct and there should be no problem with splicing into any key-on hot wire.AL W. |

Why not connect it to the positive side of the hour meter? Screw terminal connections are more secure than in-line splices. |

BW, I don't have an hour meter. Is there a lead off the ignition typically designated for one? I agree that in-line splices are lousy and usually fail. |

Andy,Most of your gauges should have a "Key On" terminal... Trim & Tilt, Volt, Tach, etc. etc.... |

Andy, I saw your boat on the highway by my house(near Cabrillo College) a couple weeks ago. I am looking forward to comparing notes on the water with our boats. Maybe even switch drivers? Compare handling? Dave |

Whalersman, the trim guage idea sounds ideal. I'll give that a try.Dave,I was probably coming back from the yard at Moss Landing where I did my bottom paint job. It would be great to compare boats. Are you planning to fish next Saturday? I hope to have all my critical projects done and put the boat in the slip one night next week. Feel like going for a spin, say Wednesday or Thursday evening? |

A terminal on the trim guage was the ideal source of ignition-on power for my FF-41. Installation was a snap. I'll provide a performance report once I've used it for a while. |
