I want to mount a manual downrigger on a 17' will be used for salmon trolling in the S.F. Bay area...I'd like to know what is the best mounting platform device and if there is a brand, model # preference and any other downrigger advice you can share with me for this boat.....Thanks in advance.

Perhaps you could describe your set up so they rest of us reading the Forum will get some good ideas.

Actually, I have seen Dick's set up on his Montauk and if it were me I'd rig downriggers exactly the same way. Those Scottys and their rail mounts are great.

Sorry, I had planed on a description and had a brain fade.

I am using Scotty manual longarms on swivel bases with rail mounts. They are clamped on with 4 thumbscrews and when removed nothing is left on the rail. I have used them for 3 years and the rails show no sign of stress.

Hey Dick,
Could you send me some pictures of your down rigger set up. I've been wanting to set up my Montauk with a couple. It's almost impossible to get down deep enough for Kings with Deep Diver rigging. My email address is in my profile.

They are on the way.

Me too, Dick, please. I was this close to buying one last week, but I wanted to be sure of getting the right one for my Katama and mounting it correctly. And thanks again for your good advice about using a 13" pitch prop with my new 50 hp Yami's perfect. Now all you need to do is teach me how to catch a fish every once in a while!

After 14 years of not dipping a line in the water I started again 3 years ago. I need help as well.

Glad all of you liked the pictures and hope they helped in your decisions. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

I used the aluminum Cannon rail mount with a Cannon Mini Mag on my Montauk and was very pleased. The mount is made of very beefy aluminum, and clamps to the rail with 4 SS bolts around one of the T joints. Low profile, no holes in the boat and plenty strong. I am now using the same set up on my Outrage 22 Cuddy.

Thanks for the pics , sending them single per email worked. Going to find a setup for my Montauk so I can get some big guys this summer/fall. Did you specifically go for Scotty's ? How do you rate that rig ?

I don't think anyone can beat Scotty in manual downriggers.
