On my 1985 9.8 Mercury lower unit - there is only one screw for the lower unit oil - how does that work? Drain , vent & fill the same? Am I missing something?

Steve- I only see one, unless the other one's above the cavitation plate (I think that's the screw that holds part of the water pump in??). It's an older style 9.8 Mercury. |

Be carefull not to unscrew what mechanics use to call the $100 Screw!! Because that is what they would charge wehn you took one of those out, they must of had to open up the housing or something? Jack. |

Gary, that small one (flathead) IS the vent screw. On older 4, 4.5, 7.5, + 9.8 Mercury outboards they used a small flathead screw (that went in at an angle) to vent the lower whilst filling from the bottom with oil. By the way, use the Merc synthetic green stuff ($9.00/qt) and stick with it. Its superb. Steve |
