On my 1985 9.8 Mercury lower unit - there is only one screw for the lower unit oil - how does that work? Drain , vent & fill the same? Am I missing something?

Steve- I only see one, unless the other one's above the cavitation plate (I think that's the screw that holds part of the water pump in??).
It's an older style 9.8 Mercury.

Be carefull not to unscrew what mechanics use to call the $100 Screw!! Because that is what they would charge wehn you took one of those out, they must of had to open up the housing or something? Jack.

Gary, that small one (flathead) IS the vent screw. On older 4, 4.5, 7.5, + 9.8 Mercury outboards they used a small flathead screw (that went in at an angle) to vent the lower whilst filling from the bottom with oil. By the way, use the Merc synthetic green stuff ($9.00/qt) and stick with it. Its superb. Steve
