Okay....here's a strange one (I think). I have a 1994 Whaler 19' Outrage with a 70 gallon gas tank. The gas cap to the tank has a safety chain on the cap so that you do not lose the cap. Well, late last season, when I was filling up the tank, the chain snapped off and fell back into my gas tank.

How does one remove a piece of chain from the gas tank? I can't imagine this is a good thing to have in my tank.

Thanks folks.

Typically the chain is secured to the cap and to the fill fitting. How did it break away from both of them?

Where do you think the chain has landed?

In the filler hose? There might have been enough flow to push it along and into the tank when pumping in gasoline.

Can take off the access plate on the tank? Is the tank baffled? It might be hard to find.

Is the chain magnetic? You might be able to fish for it with a small magnet. Don't loose the magnet!

It's probably not going to hurt anything in
there. At least on my Pate, there's a screen
over the end of the intake, so it's not going
to migrate to the engine. IF it's magnetic
(I suspect it isn't), jimh's magnet ides will
probably, work, provided the tank isn't
magnetic too (unlikely, IIRC they are aluminium.).

You might also try to get it out with a
pick-up tool -- one of those gizmos where
you push a plunger on one end, and four wire
jaws open on the other end.

HomeRun04 - I wouldn' worry about it. It can't really hurt anything - unless it could get into the feed line to the engine. As Chuck points out, typically there is a screen on the feed line. Further, your tank is baffled - meaning that the tank is configured like a house with a few walls. Chances are the small piece of chain is resting against one of those baffles and it will not move from that point. ---- Jerry/Idaho

Don't even worry about it.
Number 1, it can't hurt a thing, number 2, you couldn't fish it out even if you had to.
Forget about it & put a new one on.

Could cause a chain reaction!)
