I tried to search the previous posts for the answer to this question, but it seems all the posts are about aluminum vs. stainless. I am replacing my prop (88 17' Newport) and it seems very simple, but I was wondering how tight the nut should be placed back on. I pulled the cotter pin and when I went to take off the nut holding the old prop it was only finger tight. Could this possibly be the way it is supposed to be? My instincts say no. Also, after putting the nut on finger tight, there is a little bit of play forward and backward with the prop able to slide on the shaft. They mate tight though. Should there be play?

Boats don't have props, engines do. We know what kind of boat you have, but nothing about your engine. Most props are put on finger tight or if possible 1 turn with a wrench. There should be a thrust washer that gos on first, then the prop & in "some cases" another washer, then the nut, then the cotter pin. In some cases your forced to put the cotter pin in before the nut is real tight but snug, because the holes in the shaft wont line up if tighted anymore. Haveing a slight slop between the front of the hub & back is normal, as long as it's not over 1/16 of an inch. Sal |

Sal, Sorry for the lack of info. It is an Evinrude 100HP outboard. Thanks for your help. You totally answered my question. |
