I am refinishing the mahogany seats and side rails on my 15'. I stripped them down to bare wood with my thickness planer and sanded down to 320 grit. Do I need to use a paste grain filler before varnishing? I have a brand new anchor hatch cover made of mahogany marine plywood that appears to have been stained shade darker than the golden brown of straight varnish over mahogany. I'd like to stain all the old wood to match it.

I just refinished all of my bright work in my 1972 Katama. I used Z Spar Mahogany wood filler stain. I used the standard Mahogany color #1095. Before I stained the wood I gave it a coat of Z spar S-94 clear acrylic wood sealer then I stained and then Varnished the wood with 9 coats of Z spar #2015 Flagship varish. It looks great !!!
Better than new, very deep and rich look to it.

Good luck, it does take time to get all of these steps done but it is worth it.

blue skys to you, ~~~~Pete

I used exactly the same process, same varnish, on my Outrage TEAK. Also looks beautiful.
