I have an older '70 whaler (not exactly a montauk) and want to put a small leaning post on. I was wondering if anyone knew which size, brand etc would work best..also any any mounting tips. thanks

I put a leaning post on my Montauk. I think it is 34" wide. I purchased it from www.hot-pursuit.com. It has a fold up foot rest and 4 rod holders. I think it cost about $400. You can get a better product at www.birdsallmarine.com, but it will cost more. There are a lot of providers, you just have to look around.

Here are a few suggestions of things to consider.

1. If you are going to put the gas tank under the leaning post, make sure that the size tank you want is readily available in dimensions that will fit under the leaning post.

2. I think that a foot rest and a wide enough area to sit is mandatory. If I am going slow I sit on top.

3. Mount it close enough to the steering wheel so that you do not have to lean forward when driving and so that you can reach the steering wheel and controls sitting on top. This is my preference. Set it in the boat and try it out to find what is best for you.
