I am looking for a teak or mahoganey bench that can be installed in front of the engine resting on the inside hull lips.

I think you are going to have to make that yourself. I have the factory rear seat in my 99 Montauk but it has no wood.

I am am also thinking of building a simple stern bench seat for a montauk. Probably nothing more than a 1" thick piece of mahogany (mahogany plywood?)with a few supports. Does anyone have any suggests of what I ought to use or where I would look to purchase such a piece of wood in the Boston area? I am assuming a place like Home Depot would not have what I am looking for.

Disco Stu,

Try Anderson and Mc Quaid on 170 Fawcett St in Cambride. 617 876 3250.

I found a place outside of Hartford Ct called Harris Woodworking 80 Colonial Rd Manchester CT 860 649 4663. I do business in Hartford so I can swing in and get what I need when down there.

On this Forum, somebody once posted a photo of a masterful job o'this project done with a six-foot purchased teak dive platform. Fit right into the li'l "L"-groove into which you mount the side rails. Ah've a print of the photo, but somebody here may be able to post a link, if they know its whereabouts. Very pretty solution.

Disco Stu,
I am also in the Boston area, I would be interested in perhaps fabricating two of these seats if we can find the materials.

If you do not have high speed you may need some time to down load. The first file was the wrong one. It has pictures of a RPS seat.

Yep, those pictures show exactly what I have in mind. I am going to try to track down the proper materials when I have a moment. If anyone happens to beat me to it, let me know what you come up with. Thanks much...

I also have a factory stern seat. It has a small leg in the center that folds down and rests on the deck to support the seat. You may need something similar.

The pictures Mr. Hooter refers to are in Cetacea page 43. Very pretty.

I have a hinged Mahogany rear deck. It slides into stainless steel tracks mounted up the sides of the inside of the boat. It is hinged and allows fantasic access to the batteries, charger and battery switch. It orignially held the swivel chair normmaly mounted ay the anchor well. I took it off. I should be able to email pictures of the seat. If interested.

Kelly, I would be interested in seeing these as I just purchased 15 board feet of 5/4" teak to build a bench similar to that on pg.43. I intend to weld a stainless support beneith it that a cooler will stow, batteries to the port, 2-cycle oil to the starboard. I would like to see yours if it isn't too much trouble. Could you get my email from my profile? Thanks, pb

pb,

The pictures were sent. If interested I could get measurements and better pictures. The top sets right on the sides (railing mount level) and the motor well. Strong, Can jump on it. A great place to measure a Sturgeon or striper, or clean it for that matter. Treat for "crowded boat syndrome".
Good storage for mooring rope piss bucket, etc.....

PB,

Not quite the same layout at the Montauk, I see the reason for the aluminum frame. You are smart to take your time for ideas. "Measure twice and cut once". Nice looking boat, wish I had something that size when the wind comes up outside the Gate or starts pouring while fishing San Pablo Bay for Sturgeon.

Check out page 41 of Cetacea. There is a Montauk with an aft seat.

Just for another idea, I bought my 88 last year. It came with a wood seat that I believe to be mahogany only it has a wooded back rest as well. The support for the back is stainless with fitting that look just like the bow rail so it does not look aftermarket. The seat works great for me, as I often have kids on board. If anyone would like some pictures, send me an e-mail.

The Montauk on Cetacea 43 is mine. Here is another picture of the "rear seat". members.aol.com/bburtensha/montauk/seat2.jpg It was a teak swim platform for a larger boat that was cut down to fit. It rests on the notches on the sides and on the motor well in back.

Another alternative to a stern seat would be one of those plastic bench seats with the two planters on either side. I believe KMArt blue lights them for 29.99. You could plant your butt on the bench and some cold ones in each planter. They would drain well.Hell why nopt spruce up the old 17 footer with some lovely flower arrangemnts both port and starboard ?

I am kidding

Barry,
How about you sell me that rear seat of yours? LOL. I am now in search of a swim platform that can be cut to fit. Great look!
