I have just purchased a 2000 Dauntless 16', which has a 45 gallon internal poly tank, filler on stern, and vent on port side. I took it out for the first time today. When on the trailer this morning, the gas gauge showed at the top of the red. On the way to the ramp, I stopped for fuel but every time I tried to pump, fuel backed up the filler and spilled out. I was only able to get two gallons in. No gas ever came out the vent.

So I see one of two scenarios: (1) tank is actually full, but fuel gauge or sender is malfunctioning; (2) fuel gauge is accurate, but a clogged vent does not allow filling.

I attempted to visually inspect the tank to determine fuel level both through the stern bilge access panel and under the pilot seat, but the poly is so thick I can't really tell where the gas line is even with a flashlight. I was considering unscrewing the sender and peeking in but was hoping for an easier method. The vent screen is clear.

In case it matters, the fuel gauge is Suzuki to match the Suzuki 115.

I have read a few posts here about Dauntless fuel filling problems but none have enough details to help me. Can anybody suggest the easiest way to troubleshoot this problem? Thanks.

The early fill problems on the Dauntless were caused by the venting ca

Sorry about that, I hit either shift or cntrl and it posted.

Back to the subject: The replacement of the fuel fill and installing an overboard vent corrected the problem. It may be possible that you have a kink in either the fill or vent hose.

The 2000 Dauntless 16' is already equipped with the outboard fuel vent. The fuel filler cap is metal, and unscrews with the thingamijig on the key chain. It does NOT have the combo fuel filler/vent.

My understanding of the "early fill problem" is that only models with a combo fuel filler/vent (with a plastic cap) are affected.

I can observe most of the fuel filler line (the run is pretty short) and it doesn't seem possible that would have a kink. I can only observe a little bit of the vent line through the inspection port.

Any other ideas? A trick to see the gas level in the poly tank would be great.
