I have a 1977 Merc 1500, 150 hp on my Revenge.
Previos owner replace the pump maybe 4 years ago. I do not have a eng. temp warning that I know of on that engine.
Pump seems to be working fine by the stream of water comming out of it, but am worried about the age of engine etc. Any advise of changing the pump even thought it seems ok? How much trouble is it to do the job? I am not sure I want to just wait now that I am taking it off shore. Thanks.

Straight forward job on that motor, don't forget about the trim tab bolt. Shift gearcase into forward BEFORE you lower it so you can use the prop to line up the splines later, the shift connection is easy as its a coupler, just make sure the water tube is lining up when you slide it back on. If there is a speedo pickup in there make sure that is plugged before reassembly if you are not using it.

Once you have the hang of this procedure not a bad idea to drop the lower annually and check the impeller condition. The use of antiseize on the bolts will make this an easy job the next time. A little dish soap in the impeller housing helps lubricate it while you turn it in. I put the impeller on its key first then line up the housing over it while I turn the driveshaft clock wise. Hope this is of assistance and good luck.

Hopefully you can fix that with a shift cable adjustment, watch where the cable pulls the shift arm in the slide track as you shift forward and reverse you may have to remove the throttle cable to see this . Cable adjust with the round plastic thing I call a trunnion nut.
