I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to remove varnish from a deck with an anti-skid texture. I am refinishing the center consol of my 1970 Nauset(?) and while it’s off the boat I figure this is probably my best chance to clean up the large amount of varnish dripped on the deck by the previous owner. I’m hoping I can get it off the ‘smooth’ part of the interior with rubbing compound but the textured part of the deck looks like a tough job. As a last resort do you think a thin coat of deck paint on just the textured part would look presentable or would the varnish ‘creep’ through? Thanks.

Try using a heat gun to warm it up, then scrubbing it with fine steel wool soaked in a special varnish thinner like Interlux 216 (sold at West Marine and Boaters World).

Thanks for the advice ... I'll give it a try.

Do not use steel wool. It will leave little particules that will then rust and leave rust stains on your deck. Use Bronze wool, or a scouring pad (green pad).

Good luck,

Blue skys to you, ~~~~Pete
