Hello,

I feel bad asking an engine question, but it's on a 1980 Outrage 20.

The engine (1993 Johnson 225 Ocean Runner) fires up well, although there is a bit more smoke than I would like.

When I shift into gear, the RPM's drop, and the engine cuts out. After running the engine for a long time in neutral, it goes into gear 50% of the time without stalling. Any suggestions? Can I increase the idle speed easily?
Any thoughts on reducing the smoking?

Thanks,
Brian

What's your engine rpm while in idle? When were the spark plugs last changed out? Need to know as a starting point the answers to the above.

Clean and gap the plugs.

Then do a Link 'n' Synch, by the book. Do not attempt to set idle speed with no load.

Good luck.

Whatever you do do NOT mess with timing.

Carbs are gunked. This engine has 4 6 barrel carbs so many areas for infection. Try running a mixture of Techron or Berryman's B-12 through a 6 gallon remote tank and see what gives. Sometimes a direct injection of Techron and a 1/2 gallon of gas....run til almost out of mixture then let sit overnight, works wonders. If problem still exists, do not drive it and have it services. My $$$ is on a clogged carb which if it is lean will stuff a piston and you will be SHONGO. Try the techron or Berryman's and see what gives, do NOT run it above 1500 rpms. Speed is not the issue, flowing the cleaner through where it needs it for a period of time is what needs to be done.
