I (still) have my 1989 Mariner 40 Hp 4 cylinder 2 stroke "Magnum". It was running fine on the weekend. We were out for a full hour of cruising at 4000 RPM. Suddenly, the engine died (4000 RPM to 0 in 2 seconds). It was difficult to get it running again, but with using the fast idle, I managed to. It won't idle at all, so I have to quickly go from fast idle to "in gear forward". It runs with noticeably poor characteristics, and will only run for a minute or so until it dies again. The max RPM I can get out of it now is 2000. I suspect there may be a link between the oil injection system and my problem, because it doesn't seem to smoke much (if at all). Any ideas would be appreciated. I plan to start troubleshooting the oil injection system in a couple of days. Perhaps something got blocked, and its entered a "limp home mode".

Hi, Toad.If you are not getting oil you shouldn't be running it at all. Try a portable tank with premixed fuel. If the problem persists squeeze your primer bulb. If that picks it up your problem is fuel starvation. If it runs right your suspicions may be justified, but there is still the fuel tank, pickup and antisiphoning valve to consider. Good luck. Thanks JB. It seems to run OK on the hose with a premix tank. Problem solved I hope. Do I need to do anything to formally disconnect the premix system from future use? Just wondering if any (more) damage could result... |
