The outboard end of the drain in the splashwell on my Sakonnet is covered up by part of the motor mounting plates. Looks like the power tilt/trim is in the way precluding any drilling to let the drain function.

Any suggestions?

Hi John,

I have a 66 with a 100 HP Johnson which really pushes it.

The only time it's an annoyance is after washing down the boat.

I will be using a full cover soon so won't have to watch it catch the rain:-)

Thanks for the reply.

I think this is a common problem with older Boston Whalers that have a splash well drain in the center.

I don't know the hulls and date ranges that have this; I think it is limited to the older boats. Some comments about what years boats have this and what model have it would be interesting to have appended here.

I think that in the way-back days of the late fifties and early sixties, the mounting brackets of most outboards were different than most current designs. The older outboards must not have created this conflict with the drain.

Did most older outboards have a more open frame design to their transom mount, a design that did not interfere with a central drain hole in a splash well? May we have some observations, please!

Long ago I had an aluminum Orlando Clipper with what I think was a 60 HP Mercury. The Merc was an early 60's vintage as was the boat. It had no trim or tilt. This was accomplished manually via a movable bracket pin for trim and a lift handle on the back of the cowl for tilt. It had a lock in reverse to prevent it from kicking up. You're right about the mounting bracket. It was open in the center and sort of an inverted U shape.
