Removed floor board exposing gas tank to inspect and found surface corrosion on 2 spots the size of a half-dollar. The tank is labeled "Helios 1974" The boat is a 1974 Revenge 19'. The tank is made of aluminum.
1. Is this a problem?
2. Can this be repaired?
3. "Roy-Al Industries" in San Leandro Ca. wants $550 to $600 to build a new one. Are there any tanks available for less $ ?

There is no "strong odor" of gas so my assumption is the bottom is OK, but I will drain the fuel and remove tank for bottom inspection and general clean-up. "Roy-Al" recommended just dumping the old tank and get a new one as the tank is 28 years old. Any opinions?
Thanks.....

Dreamer - Doing the same job on my 1974 Outrage. Same tank also... To check integrity of the tank without removing it, I built a rig that allowed me to pressurize the tank. Unfortunately, the tank wouldn't hold pressure indicating a leak in the aft, bottom area.

The new tank is on order from Florida Marine Tanks - Part number BW-40, price with tax was about $340.00, shipping not included. If interested contact FMT at 305-620-9030.

AL_A_BUY - Thanks for the lead. I will need to find out how serious the surface corrosion is before pressure testing the tank. I'll look for a Aluminum weld shop and show the bad spots. If the outcome is not good, I will call your "lead" for a tank.
Thanks...

Just had a "consultation" on my boat. Regarding the corrosion spots on my tank. The surveyor said "splash zone" would work on the cleaned-up corrosion areas and small pits on the tank. WHAT SAY????
