so i changed a leaky fuel filter and now the motor is very hard to start, and when it does start is will only run at a minimum of 3,000 rpm. no way will it idle. it stalls when i bring it down. maybe i have to shoot some carb cleaner in there. maybe there's a small piece of rubber or air bubbles in the carbs. what do you guys think? by the way, the problems i had a few weeks ago with the motor turning over very slow turned out to be old cables. now i've got this going for me!

There are no idle adjustments on these carbs. You adjust the butterflies so that they are pretty much closed and then fuel is drawn through the idle circuits. On or both are probably clogged. I would rebuild the carbs because if she runs lean, she can stuff a piston...not worth the $100 to have them done. If you are mechanical and have an air compressor, you can do them yourself. After cleaning you will need to do a synch and link which sets up idle again but it needs to be in the water in gear etc and usually better for dealer/mechanic to do.

$100 for a rebuild! that's a bargain. you must live in florida. :) where in the wide wide world of sports am i going to get a guy up here to do it that cheap? I'm handy so I'll try it myself first. thanks for the detailed info.

That is to rebuild/clean them. Removal and reinstall are on your wallet. Takes about 1/2 to remove them. Just take off the spark arrestor, remove the starter and remove the carbs and linkage. Mark which one is top and take them to a shop. Should not be more than 1 hour labor to clean them up.
