How do you keep
that anchor locker hatch (mahogany) screwed down... for
as long as I had the boat (86) I keep refilling the
holes for the hinges and placing new screws. just for
it to strip off in a short period of time. Can I use
screw anchors? Different hinges? Tips....I considered
using those rubber anchors with brass inserts but these require drilling a larger hole.

If I understand correctly Raz the screw holes have wallowed out so the screws no longer hold?

If this is indeed the case you can make the holes smaller by placing round tooth picks, coated with a lightly with Elmers glue, in the holes.

Brake the tooth picks off at the top of the hole and allow to dry overnight. Replace screws.

One or two picks is all you need per hole depending on how loose the screws fit now.

Two things:
1) Use #12 screws of same length. May also need to repair cracks in the gelcoat or fg. See posts on bow rails.
2) Someone is closing the cover with something like an anchor line between the hatch and the hull. Very high leverage will pop those screws right out.
Ask me how I learned this?

Thanks for the tips. I did not use the
toothpicks in the past but used plain
wood sliver with the glue. Held for a while.
I will try the toothpicks as it should provide
for more even fill of the hole.
The problem is the hatch gets a lot of
use constant walk on as we use the boat
for fishing the flats in South Florida and
takes constant traffic of my son and I both
fishing from the bow for about a full day.

By the way, Jarhead...I see your "Khesan68"
interesting.
I flew many missions over Khesan Valley, as
a front gunner in a Cobra Gunship, 101st
Airborne, City of Hue, Phu Bai...1970.

Again, thanks for the tip.

Happy 4th!!

Yeah Raz.. Was at Khe Sanh from '67 Nov. thru the siegh '68 April as an 0311 [ground pounder].

Wounded twice during that time but never out for the count. Still carry shrapnal as a souvenir of that little melee..

BTW air support was cruial for holding the base....

Try drilling out the screw holes to about 3/8", epoxy in teak plugs to fill the holes, tap flush to deck, allow to set & remount the hinges. I've done this to reinstall bow rails on a '79 Outrage and other spots on a '76 Montauk & other problem areas where screws come loose, and so far have maintained a tight fit after two years.

I'm not sure if you mean that the screws in the hatch itself are stripping, or if the the screws in the hull are stripping.

Either way, West System with a dowel in the hull should be fine. If it's the hatch cover, through-bolt the bottom hole on the hatch. You need a screw on the top hole, because the nut would hit the lip of the hatch on that one.
