Anyone done this? Looks like the Montauk configuration would work well in the 15.

yes, I think it would work, but if you have ever been in a montauk, then you already know they have little room between the console and the gunnels. On the 15`, unless your Shaggy from Scooby Doo, it will be pretty tight to get around it, also the seat I would think? Jack.

You'd be better off buying non whaler, aftermarket console and seat that are a little smaller then Moutauk interior. Not only would fit the boat better but it would save money.

I once went out on the harbor and met a guy (a member here) who has a 13' hull with a Newport console and seats, it was good looking and more practical then the stock "sport" interior, but again it took up allot of room.

Without a rigging tunnel on a 15-foot hull, how will you accomplish the installation of a center console?

If you are considering a center console for the 15 go after market. The Montauk console (shortened in height)was used in the 15 CC with almost no room at all on each side. I have a small console from the Sundance Skiff that will work good. Clark Roberts used a Carolina Skiff console on his, I think.
Jimh, most smaller center console rigs, the Carolina Skiff and others use a metal cover to protect the wiring and cables. It is not ideal but since most hulls are rigged many ways it is economical and does not cost a lot. I have debated routing a channel in the deck of my boat but cringe at the though.

Back in 1990 I ordered a fiberglass center console for my 15 SS from Pipe Welders in Ft. Lauderdale. It was called a skiff console and finished in desert tan gelcoat. It was slightly smaller than a Montauk console and very high quality. Don't know if they still offer them or not. I then drilled a 2-1/2" hole under the floor from the bilge sump pit to the console and installed 2" Carlon electrical tubing to run all cables and wires from the engine. Really not that difficult a job.

I'm not sure you will be happy with this set up.

The 15 is more "tippy" than the Montauk...putting your weight up higher will only destablize the boat futher. I would think that cornering while standing up might be a bit scary.

Test it out. I sometimes stand up in my 15 to "Stretch the legs" and give my butt a break... I do this at a fairly slow speed (and with the lanyard connected to my wrist). The boat will sway quite a bit when you shift your weight.

Try that first and think about how the boat will handle at speed...if you're still interested...go for it..it's your boat, and it would probably look pretty cool. I just want to be sure you're going to be happy with such a modification.

Dave,

Actually, my 15 was quite stable and I never once felt uncomfortable running it at WOT (which was probably close to 50 mph with the 70 Johnson) while standing. With the center console you ARE in the center of the boat which helps stabilize it. It had a custom leaning post and most people, at first glance, mistook it for a Montauk.

I stand corrected by someone with real-world experience. Like I said - sounds like a really cool set-up...I just wanted to be sure that they're comfortable with the stability of the platform. There has been some discussion recently on the forum about a whaler that capsized - the speculation was that it could have been due, in part to the mounting of a radar arch, changing the center of gravity for the boat.
