im redoing my 25ft frontier and would like to know if the fuel filters should go inside the battery box or the outside?i think the outside incase of fumes and a spark from the battery.the guy helping me hooked them on the inside.so know i have to unloosen them to take the battery out.so who is right he did it for looks and im thinking for saftey.

You are right.
I had a fire aboard a 25' challenger caused by a voltage regulator that failed on one of the engines. The battery overheated and caught fire. It was bad enough that both batteries and and two oil tanks were in one compartment I can't imagine what would have happened if the fuel filters were inside there too.

Now I keep a closer eye on battery voltages.

Elmofudd I hope you don't mind if I expand your thread a tad.
Just wondering what would have happened If I hadn't got the fire under control.

Does anyone know what the burn characturistics are of whalers? Anyone ever see one burn?

Saw one burn to the waterline in the late 1980's in Cedarville Michigan.

Two girls I briefly knew up there while I was in High School had borrowed their dad's Montauk for the evening to drive into town for the youth dance that was held every Thursday evening. Not sure how it happened, but the boat caught fire and damaged the public dock as well. The boat burned all the way to the hard chine before people were able to extinguish it. The keel and bow section were still intact, and it still floated, but in the back it had burned all the freeboard down to water.

Heard about it the next morning and went into town for a look-see. They were loading the remainder of the hull on a trailer in Hessel at Mertaugh's Boat Works.

Saw the same two girls the following Thursday at the dance - in a brand new Montauk.

I would suggest that the fuel probably assisted the burn...I'm not convinced that the hull will readily burn on it's own without an accellerant.

Tom - have you tried to ignite any of the foam from Chain-Saw Whaler?

It is probably much better to mount the fuel/water separating filter in an open area. Give some thought to the clearance under the filter so you can change it without difficulty. Also consider you might want to be able to trap any spills before they get into the bilge.

I have seen some fuel/water separating filters mounted in such a way that they are likely to get washed down often from water in the transom splash well. On my boat the filter is mounted on the hull inwale and elevated above the deck a foot or more. This keeps it out of the water (unless the whole cockpit floods).

The first thing I did with my 25 was to remove all fuel lines from inside the port battery box and put external fuel filters outside...

You can't see the filters buried inside the locker or bleed them.
