I have been researching materials for my fall project. I willbe replacing the strips of plywood that secure my console to the deck in my newport. I have some questions

1. there seem to be a couple simmilar materials to use on this project what would you guys suggest?

2. what should I use under these strips to seal them to the deck?

3. are there any specific problem areas I should inspect while I have it appart?

thanks in advance
regards, Bruce

Howdy, Bruce.

Starboard and Whaleboard are very different products. What they have in common is that they are expensive and virtually indestructible (sp?).

Whaleboard is not pretty stuff. It is excellent for holding machine screws and it is easily bonded with epoxies.

If your problem is loosening of the screws that hold the plywood to the deck, I would put Whaleboard plugs into the deck and thread them for machine screws. The method is described several times in the archives under bow rail screw loosening topics.

If, on the other hand, the problem is deterioration of the plywood strips themselves Starboard is a good looking replacement, but does not hold screw threads or bond as well as Whaleboard.

Info and samples of Whaleboard can be obtained from Richlite. Email Tami at tami@richlite.com.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks JB The screws are still tight to the deck and the plywood is starting to deteriorate. I think that the starboard/marine board will be nice as it will be fastened mechanically to the deck and the console will then fasten to it. Any other suggestions??
Thanks again Bruce

Daytona Plastics has a new material called, I believe, "Daytona Board" and is a composite of air-entrained PVC (like starboard) and wood particles. According to a program on "Ship Shape TV" it is paintable, won't rot/absorbe water, holds screws, and works just like wood... interesting!??? happy Whalin'.. Clark.. SCN
