Looking for advice about the cost of a high speed stator repair on a '91 mercury 40hp 4cylinder. The shop has quoted @500$ because of having to remove flywheel. This engine has been good to me up until now:) but I was just wondering about shop charges (80$/hr) and parts, it seems steep to assume a 5 hour job (5x80=400 plus stator cost)unless the stator itself is very expensive. Any thoughts? I know they have a shop guide that predicts how long it should take to do the job

Thats an easy repair. I replaced the stator on my 150 myself. The stator was about $160 dollars. Just get a flywheel puller. It helps if you have a shop manual. once you get the flywheel off its pretty simple. seasled

Your labor rate of $80/hour is typical. The part may be expensive, over $250. The installation can probably be done in a hour or two at the most. There may be charges for retuning the engine if the stator assembly that has been changed affects the ignition timing of the engine. Add another hour of labor for that. This makes your $500 quote in the ballpark.

Can you do this yourself?

I am not a novice to having a tool in my hand, but there was no way I could remove the retaining nut on the crankshaft of my Yamaha outboard (to allow removal of the flywheel). I think you need an impact wrench.

The retaining nut is a large nut and it has been tightened to at least 150-ft-lbs. It also very likely has been painted in place. And it has been corroding slightly to the crankshaft for the last decade or more.

Also, the nut is on the crankshaft, so it wants to rotate the engine. You have to hold the flywheel in place while you try to remove the nut. Typically there is special tooling to hold the flywheel. You don't want to jam something into it and damage a gear tooth.

If you do get that nut loose, then be careful removing the flywheel. The crankshaft bearings can be damaged if you hammer on the shaft end.

After two weekends of trying to remove that nut, I gave up and had the shop do it.

The price of the stator depends on the particular engine and brand. There are often multiple coils involved in "the stator" and on some engines you have to buy an assembly of all of them that is expensive, $250 or more. On other engines you can buy just the coil you need, and it is less expensive, say around $100.

Your potential to perform this yourself depends on your mechanical experience and what kind of tools you have handy. Some people pay to get lightbulbs replaced; others talk about rebuilding an engine like something you do between lunch and dinner on a Sunday afternoon.

One suggestion if you do try this yourself and don't have an impact wrench: drive the boat over to a local auto repair or gas station and see if they can break that nut loose with their impact wrench. You might have to pay $5 for this service, but it is much cheaper than buying a compressor and an impact driver, etc.

I did the same thing on my 85 Evinrude 235 a few weeks ago. I agree with jimh, have someone with an impact take off the fly wheel nut, it made it much easier.

The original stator is NLA and Mercury parts bulletin #96-1 lists 3 different stators for that 1991 40 hp. List prices ranges from $207.40 to $375.35. The serial number would be necessary to figure out which one will work.

Five hours seems a little steep, at our shop you would be looking at 1 hour for diagnostics, 1 to 1 1/2 hours to pull the flywheel and replace the stator and another 1 to hour for testing and adjustments.
